Training TipsDogs learn by association, and especially positive experiences. Be sure to set your dog up for success, and use these training tips to create a dog with good manners. See the services page for a listing on dog training options.
Feeding a high quality diet is important to your dog’s health, but beneficial for puppy house training too. When your dog is able to better digest his food, there is less mess to clean up.
Be sure to take treats with you when going outside for potty breaks, and immediately reward your dog’s good behavior.
Loose leash walking is important to teach dog. It’s not only safer, it’s proper social manners. Training equipment helps, such as an Easy Walker by Premier, but you still need to teach your dog the commands.
Start by holding a treat or toy by your side and encourage them to walk along side you. If your dog pulls on leash, stop moving, and guide them back to your side.
If your dog can’t come when called inside the house, then he can’t be expected to do it when outside. Start with low distraction areas, and build your way up. Keep you dog on a long line (20-30’), not a retractable leash. This prevents them from running away when training. If your dog is too distracted to be successful, go back to working in easier environments until you feel ready.
Dogs bark for many reasons. Constant barking is a problem. Ask your neighbors if the dog is barking all day, or just when you leave. Be sure to reward and praise you dog when he chooses to not bark, such as perking up his ears, but not making a noise. If your dog is barking for attention, do not acknowledge him until he stops.
By nature dogs are curious, especially to exciting smells, such as the trash can. Managing the house hold, and “puppy proofing” is important to keep your pup out of trouble, and prevent destructive behavior. Make sure your puppy has enough appropriate items to chew on, such as Bully Sticks and interactive toys. Rotate his toys and chews regularly to keep his interest so he won’t destroy your house.
